Wilma Jean Chang

October 16, 1938 — March 16, 2022

Wilma Jean Penrod Smith Chang was an excellent mother, loving grandmother, sweet friend, and an overall precious human being. She passed away the morning of March 16, 2022.

She was born to James Wesley Penrod and Mildred Helen (Stearns) Penrod in Murphysboro, IL on October 16, 1938, the fourth of six children. She met and married Alvin Smith in 1956 and had four children: Kathy Smith, Russell Smith (Melinda), Barbara Cottom (Brian), and Joseph Smith. After Alvin's passing, she met and married David Yen Chang in 1986 and had one daughter: Bethany Chang.

Wilma loved painting, writing, and talking to everyone she met. She overflowed with joy and gave love freely to her friends and family. She was a strong believer in the Lord Jesus Christ and is probably overjoyed right now to be spending time with her loved ones in heaven.

She is preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, and older sister Irma Reiman. She is survived by siblings Gladys Miner, Delbert Penrod (Barbara), Virginia Cook (Howard), and Jama Legrand. She is also survived by all five of her loving children, 10 grandchildren: Heather Claiborne (Ricky), Sean Clarkston, Ashlea Wright, Stephen Cottom, Shane Smith (Stacy), Courtney Smith, Seth Smith (Anna), Michael Stephanides, Kathryn Stephanides, and Soren Ortiz; and 12 great-grandchildren. She will be deeply and truly missed by all who love her on this earth.
