Matthew Wayne Lackey was born September 9, 1985 in Hendersonville TN and he passed away on April 10, 2017 in Boulder, CO from a hiking accident. He was 31 years old.
Matthew was the son of Wayne and Kathy Lackey of Castalian Springs. He was an executive chef.
In addition to his parents he is survived by two sister, Sonya Stone of Gallatin and Laura Blackwell of Castailian Springs' Paternal Grandmother, Buelah Lackey of Castailian Springs, Maternal Grandmother, Shirley Williams of Gallatin. Other family and friends also survive.
Lackey grew up in the Castilian Springs area, northeast of Gallatin, and spent much time on his grandfather's farm, where he cultivated a love of food. After attending the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, N.Y., and Le Cordon Bleu in Arizona, he spent time in Sean Brock's Husk and McCrady's kitchens in Charleston and considered Brock a mentor. Lackey returned to the Nashville area and eventually rose to become executive chef at Flyte. He was named a Young Gun by Eater in 2013 and a rising star by Star Chefs in 2014.
After leaving Flyte, he eventually moved to Colorado, where he opened Arcana in Boulder last year.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 22, 2017 at 12 noon. The service will be held at the family farm at 310A Old Hwy 25 in Castalian Springs TN. Dress is requested to be casual.
