Martharee Monts Carter, 89, of Murfreesboro, TN, formerly of Hartford, CT, entered into her rest on Valentine's Day, February 14, 2017.
Mother Carter, as she was affectionately known, was the last surviving of thirteen offspring born to the late George Hiram Monts and Margaree Addy Monts. Born in Plains, Georgia on March 27, 1927 she accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at the St. John's AME Church. Always a bright and eager student, she graduated from Staley High School in 1945 and was offered a full scholarship to Bethune-Cookman College. However, following her calling to be a mother, she married her husband of over sixty-eight years, the late Luther Lavorgia Carter on June 30, 1945.
Two years later, they migrated to Hartford, where they would build a life together. Her life was one based on faith and reliance in God. Having faced many illnesses and situations that would have been debilitating and deadly to others, she constantly defied the odds of diagnoses by her strong belief.
While in Hartford, she attended the Hartford Secretarial School where she excelled in corporate communications and correspondence. She later went to work in the insurance industry and at G. Fox Department Stores, where she was befriended by the late Mrs. Auerbach. She later worked for the United States Postal Service as a Personnel Supervisor and Retirement and Benefit Specialist where she was employed for thirty-five years before retiring in 1998.
Her faith was most rewarded in the birth of the five children that survive her and her husband: Dr. Wayne Anthony Carter (Yvette), Gena Ruth Carter, M.D. (James W. Edwards), Attorney Martin Luther Carter, Apostle David Salvatore Carter, and Pastor Bruce Lavoisier Carter. She is also survived by four grandsons: Daniel Ryan Cody, Brantley LeRoy Carter, Jordan Isaiah Carter, and David Joshua Carter, two granddaughters: Evelyn Ruth Carter, Ph.D., Rebecca Anne Carter, and one great-granddaughter, Savannah LeAnne Carter.
She was also a founding member of the Mount Moriah Baptist Church of Hartford where she served as clerk for over thirty years.
Along with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchild, she leaves scores of others that saw her as a mother and mentor. She was often heard thanking God for "those that came through her and the ones that came to her."
She was also an an amazing cook and hostess and it was nothing for her to prepare a meal for one to one hundred, right in their Rosemont Street home. "61," as it was called, was a sanctuary for hundreds, over the years. It was not uncommon to find renowned educators, entertainers, singers, preachers, or anyone else, packed in the house, enjoying one of her delicious meals. There was not a cuisine that she couldn't prepare.
She will always be remembered as a person of faith, love, and family. The family is extremely grateful for the care, love, and support of St. Thomas Rutherford Hospital, Amedisys Hospice and Sunnington Assisted Living in Murfreesboro, TN for our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, cousin, and dearest friend in the final days of her life.
Her memorial service will be on Saturday, February 18, 2017 at Nashville's First Baptist Church, 108 7th Avenue South, Nashville, TN, at 11:00 am. Visitation begins at 10:00 am.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to the Westminster School Scholarship Fund in her name, 995 Hopmeadow Street, Simsbury, CT 06070.
