Lillian Bennett Poyner, age 99, passed away peacefully on September 15, 2020. Ms. Poyner was born on November 29, 1920 in Carrier Mills, Illinois to the late Harry and Tekla Bennett. She was a World War II Veteran, joining the Women’s Auxiliary Army Corps in 1942 at the age of 22. She continued her service with the Shawnee National Park Service, Golconda Job Corps, and Tennessee Red Cross until she retired at age 83. After retirement, she continued to volunteer for clerical duties where she lived Crestwood Towers in Gallatin until age 94. She is survived by her children, Nancy A. Simpson, H. Sam Poyner and Tim Poyner; grandchildren, Andy Simpson, Denny Poyner, Chris Poyner, and Lessie Poyner; great-grandchildren, A.J. Simpson, Caleb Simpson, Preston Poyner, Kayla Poyner, and Coy Poyner. Lillian was cremated and will be laid to rest with Military Honors at Nashville National Cemetery at a later date. Lillian was a caring and loving mother and friend. She was very proud of her service in World War II and proud to serve her community. While serving at the Gallatin Red Cross, she would take calls and make arrangements 24 hours a day for people needing emergency housing. She never complained, always seeing the good in people and willing to help. If you ever saw a little white car driving around Gallatin with a load of little ladies, chances are it was Lillian taking the girls out to the store or running errands. A Great Mother has left this earthly plain and ascended to a higher place where she will be with our loved ones that have gone before us. Our family wishes to give heartfelt thanks to everyone that has given their love, prayers, and support during this time. God Bless You All!
