Larry Wayne Mathews, age 69 of Hendersonville, passed away in the comfort of his home on Sunday, August 23, 2020.
Larry was most known for his avid love of animals and support of the ASPCA and Humane Society of Sumner County. He could be found building heated houses for stray cats, opossums, and raccoons during the winter as well as feeding anything on four legs that would walk through his yard. He was a proud Army veteran and patriot who loved our American flag. You would find him on the sidelines of a Hendersonville Commando football game cheering on his Commando’s or walking the aisles of Lowes or Harbor Freight looking for the next tool to add to his collection. He enjoyed spending his summer Saturday nights down at the race track and loved all things NASCAR. He was a tinkerer of all sorts and loved working in his garage or on his red F150. Larry firmly believed that the ’69 Ford Mustang was a gift from God. His witty sense of humor and ability to crack a joke in any situation made him endearing and a delight to be around. Those that knew his softer side know of his love of yellow buttercups, Motown, Neil Diamond, and doting over his cats.
He was preceded in death by his father, Graham Mathews and mother, Pauline Moss Mathews. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Linda Mathews; daughters, Stephanie Laws of Las Vegas, NV and Kimberly (Peter) Adair of Scottsdale, AZ; and grandchildren, Lily and Liam Adair.
No services are planned at this time. His family requests that memorial donations be made to the Humane Society of Sumner County, 16 Volunteer Drive, Hendersonville TN 37075 or online at
