Albert Lawrence Yunker

January 21, 1923 — November 7, 2022

Albert L. Yunker, age 99 of Nashville, TN passed away peacefully at his home, with his children by his side on November 7, 2022. He was born in Nashville on January 21,1923 to the late Charles and Joe Yunker.

Raised by his beloved Uncle and Aunt, William and Ethel Yunker who preceded him in death, he was raised in the same house in North Nashville in the Germantown ("Cab Hollow") area with his seven cousins who he considered to be his brothers and sisters: Herbert Yunker, James Yunker, John Yunker, Mary Margie Nash, Juanita Mooneyhan, and Lila Faye Johnson, all preceded him in death. A graduate of North Nashville High School, he worked as a plumber for 50 years and was a proud member of the Plumbers and Pipefitters Union Local 572. He worked on many iconic buildings around the city of Nashville. He worked for many years for TVA and retired from the Saturn plant.

He was a Shriner in the "Hard Hat" unit. He enjoyed working the Shriner circus and driving the children to the Shriners Hospital in Lexington for a day of treatment every time he was asked. He was a Mason with the Centre Star Lodge #409 for 72 years. He was a Private First Class in the Army during WWII (1942-1945) in the Bismarck-Archipelago campaign in New Guinea under the direction of General Douglas MacArthur. Classified as a radar repairman, he was also responsible for guiding pilots back from bombing missions. He was awarded three Bronze Stars, WW11 Victory Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, AP Theater Ribbon and a Marksman Rifle badge. He was honorably discharged in 1945.

He always put his family first, providing a loving, stable home for them. He lived a life of example in instilling in his children integrity, honesty and to do an honest day's work; to be kind and help others.
A quiet and humble man who spoke little but his words carried weight when he did.

Albert was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Mary Nell; his grandson, Ryan Simms; son-in-law, Bob Simms; and infant sister, Ruth Celestine. He is survived by his children, Deborah (Bob) Simms, Matthew (Dianne) Yunker, Connie (Ron) Swinehart, and Kevin Yunker; grandson, Justin Simms; and sister, Mable Christine Griffin.

A service to celebrate his long and great life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, November 11, 2022 at Dalewood Baptist Church, 1586 McGavock Pike, Nashville 37216 with Pastor Frank Lewis officiating.
